Project Summary :

Kudumbashree, a comprehensive women empowerment programme in Kerala focuses primarily on women’s poverty and employment. It is a women-oriented Self Help Group scheme set up by the Government of Kerala in 1998. In this project the socio economic status of women who have been associated with Kudumbashree and impact of Kudumbashree Mission for the empowerment of women in Kerala was studied. Using the sampling survey we found that about 99.5 percent members of the Kudumbashree reported that their morale and confidence have increased substantially. According to 92.1 percent of respondents, Kudumbashree members have acquired skills, knowledge, confidence and leadership qualities substantially. The results of the field survey revealed that the social power of Kudumbashree Units have grown up significantly. The status of women in families has also improved after they became members of Kudumbashree. According to 87 percent of respondents, Kudumbashree members developed leadership qualities, and achieved political empowerment. It is reported that in the 2005 election to the local government in Kerala, over 3200 Kudumbashree women contested and over 1400 of them got elected whereas in 2010 election, 3600 got elected which is a clear evidence of political empowerment of Kudumbashree women. Kudumbashree Mission is also a platform for rural women to raise social issues. In short Kudumbashree is the source of power for the new generation women in Kerala. Within a short span of time the Mission could surpass many major milestones. It is significantly observed that Kudumbashree have set a baseline for the formation of social capital at grass root level. Through this study it was observed that Kudumbashree Mission is a role model of development for the entire Nation.
